Use it away from home

Without extra setup, children’s devices only work on your home Wi-Fi, and your parent page only opens on the home computer. Tailscale gives you a private HTTPS address that only your own devices can reach.

  1. On the home computer, run:

    Terminal window
    openbuddies tailscale setup

    It asks before installing anything. It then signs you in (it shows a QR code, so a computer with no screen can be signed in from your phone) and turns on Tailscale Serve.

  2. Install the Tailscale app on each phone and tablet, and sign in with the same account. OpenBuddies shows a QR code for the download.

  3. Make new pairing codes with openbuddies pair <child>. They now use the HTTPS address.

HTTPS also lets devices add OpenBuddies to the home screen properly and turn on reminder notifications.

Check it with openbuddies tailscale status, and turn it off with openbuddies tailscale off.
