The household folder

Everything OpenBuddies knows about your family lives in one folder. Copying it is the whole backup.

OpenBuddies looks for the folder in this order:

  1. --home <dir> on the command.
  2. The OPENBUDDIES_HOME environment variable.
  3. ~/.openbuddiesrc, a pointer init writes if you chose a different place.
  4. ~/openbuddies.
  • Directoryopenbuddies/
    • openbuddies.yaml you, your PIN (hashed), models, port, daily budget
    • .env your AI key and any other keys, readable only by you
    • Directorychildren/
      • Directorysam/
        • profile.yaml name, age, school year, subjects
        • rules.yaml help levels and other rules for this child
        • CONTEXT.md made from the two files above, regenerated when they change
        • Directorysessions/ one file per sitting
          • …
    • Directoryapps/ apps you added: app.yaml and SKILL.md
      • …
    • Directorydata/
      • openbuddies.db sessions, turns, blocked drafts, problems, alerts, devices
      • Directoryfiles/ each buddy’s photos and notes
        • …
      • Directorymemory/ each buddy’s notes, as Markdown
        • …
    • Directorylogs/
      • server.log

Edit these and OpenBuddies picks up the change without a restart: openbuddies.yaml, .env, each child’s profile.yaml and rules.yaml, and each app’s app.yaml and SKILL.md.

Buddy memory notes are plain Markdown in data/memory/<child>/<buddy>.md. You can read or edit them by hand; the previous version is kept as .md.bak.
